Sharpen your talons, alumni! Mean Green football faces off with rival SMU at the first away game of the season, and the Dallas County Alumni Chapter is helping you paint the town green.

Kick-off the action on September 8 at the UNT vs. SMU Alumni Pep Rally. We’ll be at Four Corners Brewery, owned by alumnus George Esquivel (’91), for a sneak-peak of the new facility before it opens to the public. Get in the spirit with $3 brews and appearances by the UNT Spirit Squad and Scrappy. After dark, chill out on the patio with The Southpaw Preacher, a skillful 8-piece soul/funk band born out of UNT’s own Division of Jazz Studies.

On game day, skip the ice run and leave the cooler at home. The UNT Alumni Association is bringing the tailgate celebration to you at UNT vs. SMU!

We’ll be grilling up tailgate favorites right outside of Dallas Hall to announce that the Mean Green have arrived. Get into the groove with 80’s cover band Live 80 and their break dance trio, then pump up the pride with heart-thumping performances by UNT’s Green Brigade marching band and Spirit Squad.

Essay: Tenacity by recent graduate Marisa Nowicki

Tenacity” by Marisa Nowicki (’17) – Although neither of my parents attended college, they fostered in me a deep love of learning from an early age. We would often play word games in the car, and it was during one of these car rides that my dad introduced the new word-of-the-week: “tenacity,” the quality of being determined or persistent. I’ve always liked the word, and as an adult it often reminds me how much my family has sacrificed to ensure I gained a quality education. READ MORE

Purchase with a Purpose

University of North Texas student found his calling for helping others following last year’s July 7 ambush of police officers in downtown Dallas, which left five officers dead and wounded a total of 11 people.

“The Dallas shooting was bad, but it sparked a fire in me and I’m going to let that fire shine bright,” said Ipinowula “Ipi” Adedokun, a junior majoring in finance.

Following the shooting, Adedokun wanted to help children who lost parents that night, but he didn’t know how – so he started a group in hopes it could become a nonprofit to lend him credibility. This June, just a few weeks before the one-year anniversary of the shooting, the organization – World Apparel Co. – became designated as a domestic nonprofit corporation. About half of the proceeds from online purchases of T-shirts and trendy dresses, jackets and hats goes to aid children’s charities or individual families.  READ MORE

Student creation for retail’s top show lands UNT team spot on HSN with designer

An idea created on campus is giving three University of North Texas graduates the opportunity of a lifetime – a live appearance on the HSN television shopping network. They will appear in a cell in the 7-9 p.m. (Eastern) slot Aug. 4 (Friday).

Thanks to a unique handbag design, the former students won the National Retail Federation’s 2016 Student Challenge at the annual “BIG Show” in New York City. There they met NRF judge and designer Danielle DiFerdinando, founder and creative director at Danielle Nicole and a regular HSN feature. She pitched an idea to HSN and then invited Katelyn Patrick Boutin, Nichole Fallis and McKenzie Hibler – all 2016 graduates of UNT’s merchandising and digital retailing programs – to join her on a show. Summer Family Events

July 18th, 2017 | Posted in Alumni News

A giraffe’s tongue is black. An airplane’s “black box” is not.

Curious minds young and old can explore these facts and more at the UNT Alumni Association’s summer family events.

On July 29, we’ll have our eyes to the skies at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas. Guests will enjoy a catered breakfast on the mezzanine level with an eagles-eye view of suspended aircraft displays. Kids can enjoy the indoor play space and flight themed crafts while parents explore the museum’s impressive 35,000-piece collection of aviation and space flight history.

On August 12, our Tarrant County Chapter invites you to a fun-filled day at the Fort Wort Zoo. Start off with a hearty breakfast and an up-close Animal Encounter, then discover the wild with your family.

Whether your interest takes you down onto the Savanah or high in the skies, you’ll create new family memories at the UNT Alumni Association’s summer events. Bring your UNT friends to celebrate the old memories, too!
