The Current IRS Discount Rate is 2.2%

Also known as the AFR or Applicable Federal Rate, the IRS Discount Rate is part of the calculation used to determine the charitable deduction for many types of planned gifts, such as charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities. The rate is the annual rate of return that the IRS assumes the gift assets will earn during the gift term.

If you are considering a planned gift to the University of North Texas, you may use the discount rate for the month in which the gift is made or for either of the prior two months to calculate the planned gift deduction.

If you have questions on how to utilize the current IRS discount rate for planned giving or major gifts, please give the Office of Planned Giving a call at 940-565-3683 or email Roy Grisham at

Did you know the UNT Debate team, established 1901, is the oldest continuously running student organization on campus? Dr. Brian Lain, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, has led the team since 2005. He coaches students to utilize real-time critical thinking and strengthen usage of the three types of appeals: ethos, logos and pathos—all heavily deployed in Debate tournaments and the real world. Over 10 years, Dr. Lain’s team brought home more than 175 trophies from national tournaments.

The UNT Debate team is working to build a UNT Debate alumni community. In April, the team hosted its 2nd annual Debate Alumni reunion—a mock debate between alumni and current students. Save the date for next year’s mock debate: April 20, 2018.

To propel the UNT Debate to new heights, give a gift to them today

Did you know that faculty and staff of UNT also donate to scholarships and programs, just like alumni? Each April, the Annual Fund at UNT hosts the
We Care We Count Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign which encourages UNT full-time employees and retirees to pick a place on campus they care about and donate to it! Last year, 720 faculty and staff members broke the record for number of donors during We Care We Count—a record which we hope to break again this year. UNT students benefit immensely when the entire UNT community of alumni, parents, and faculty and staff come together and showcase the giving spirit of the Mean Green.
