For Love and UNT: Alumna Endows Scholarship to Honor Husband on 25th Anniversary
Cathy Bryce

Cathy Bryce (’91 Ph.D.) can sum up her husband’s connection with the University of North Texas in one simple sentence: “UNT is in his DNA.”

Bryce’s husband, Jack Atkins (’66, ’69 M.S.), attended the College of Education’s laboratory school from the age of 5 through the eighth grade. After graduating from Denton High, he returned to UNT to earn a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees. He remained connected with the university throughout his more than 30-year career as a teacher, coach and principal.

So, when Bryce, former superintendent of Highland Park ISD and herself a proud UNT graduate, was looking for a special gift to celebrate the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, she found a way to honor her husband, his love of UNT and his dedication to the teaching profession by endowing a scholarship in his name through the UNT College of Education.

“Jack has had such a long connection with UNT, and the university has been so good to both of us,” Bryce said. “I just thought, this scholarship tells him how much I love him, and it celebrates something that’s really important, to him and to both of us.”

The Jack Atkins Education Scholarship supports students from the Denton community who aspire to become teachers and educational leaders. The first scholarship will be distributed this fall.

Supporting students in the College of Education was an obvious choice for Bryce, not only because of the couple’s longtime careers in education, but also because they got to know each other while taking classes at UNT in the late 1980s, Atkins working on post-graduate certification in Educational Administration and Bryce working on her doctorate. Education continues to be a shared passion.

“Our worlds are all better off when people are educated,” she said. “It raises the chances that we live in peace and understanding and harmony and have an appreciation for things that are bigger than ourselves – all that comes from being educated.”

Bryce said she hopes other alumni will consider supporting the university as a way of honoring a loved one on special occasions or holidays like Valentine’s Day.

“We have so many students at North Texas who are first generation, and many of them can’t do it without some financial help. To me, it so hammers home what Jack and I believe – do your little part, because it really is a difference maker, and kids need people to make a difference for them,” she said.

College of Arts and Sciences
Dr. Costabile-Heming

Dr. Costabile-Heming has been awarded two fellowships to support her travel to Germany this summer to complete the research for her book on contemporary German author, Friedrich Christian Delius. Delius is the recipient of 17 prestigious literary prizes, and his texts have been translated into 18 languages. Costabile-Heming has been researching him since 2000 when she first met him in Berlin. She has been focusing on him intently since 2013 when she received permission to access his literary estate in the German Literature Archive in Marbach.

I asked Dr. Costabile-Heming what inspired her to write the book on Friedrich Christian Delius.

“He began his literary career at age 20, and he has written about topics of German history that impact how Germany views itself. Most of his texts deal with contemporary events, and they are things that I remember even from childhood (such as Vietnam War protesters) and that had an impact on my life and my career (such as the unification of Germany). So, the timeframe within his texts spans my lifetime, which I find quite fascinating. When I read his texts, I also think about my memories and my experiences.”

Dr. Costabile-Heming was awarded a one month fellowship from the German Literary Archive in Marbach, Germany and a 2-month research stay from the German Academic Exchange Service.
