The BIG Event – 2015

The BIG Event - 2015Join the University of North Texas Alumni Association, UNT students, faculty, staff and fellow alumni as we celebrate a day of service through The Big Event.

On Saturday, March 28, 2015, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., thousands of UNT Eagles will join together in helping our community.

Any UNT alum who registers will work on the Stop Hunger Now project packaging meals in the Gateway Ballroom on the UNT campus.

Tentative Schedule for UNT Alumni at The Big Event:

8 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. — Welcome all volunteers to The Big Event, Library Mall, UNT Campus

9 a.m. – Noon — Volunteer work assignment; UNT Alumni works with Stop Hunger Now in the Gateway Ballroom, UNT Campus

Noon – 2 p.m. — Party on the Mall with pizza and music for volunteers

UNT Honors College Presents

UNT Honors College Presents:

Great Conversations is a unique event benefiting the Honors College at the University of North Texas. This engaging program brings together individuals of accomplishment and skill to facilitate conversations on important, diverse, and stimulating topics, ranging from the intellectual to the lighthearted.

The event is scheduled for February 24, 2015, in the Apogee Stadium Clubroom at UNT (1251 S. Bonnie Brae, Denton, TX 76207). Check-in for guests begins at 6:00 p.m. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Guests will be invited to begin conversations with the expert of their choice following a superb dinner. Tickets are $75.00.

Proceeds from the event will directly benefit Honors College students by supporting insightful and exciting programming, as well as scholarships for Honors College students.

Feeding the Eagles

This spring, the UNT Dean of Students Office will open a food pantry to serve as a temporary solution for students who find themselves unable to buy healthy, nutritious food after taking care of other expenses.

UNT to offer special tuition rate for Oklahoma residents

Starting in Fall 2015, Oklahoma residents pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Texas will pay roughly half the cost of nonresident (out-of-state) tuition.

Counseling alumnae receive national awards from Association for Play Therapy

Terri Gonzales (’12 Ph.D.) received the Student Research Award for her dissertation research, “Child Teacher Relationship Training as a head start: early mental health intervention for children exhibiting disruptive behavior.” Terry Kottman (’87 Ph.D.), director of The Encouragement Zone, received the Lifetime achievement award. Less Pain, More Gain – Studying ways to boost exercise results gets UNT researchers $45,000 in grants

Less Pain, More Gain

Three University of North Texas researchers have been awarded grants totaling more than $45,000 to study topics that could someday help athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts train more effectively. Faculty member Jakob Vingren, doctoral degree candidate Adam Venable and dual doctoral and master’s degree candidate Danielle Levitt each received awards from the National Strength and Conditioning Association – for a total of three of the organization’s five award categories – related to their work in UNT’s Applied Physiology Laboratory within the College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation. Emily Klement Alumna helps establish petroleum technology program at community college campuses

Recent College of Education doctoral graduate and recipient of the Higher Education program’s Distinguished Alumni Award, Emily Klement (’92, ’94 M.Ed., ’12 Ed.D.), was instrumental in establishing a new educational program at the Bowie and Graham Campuses of North Central Texas College (NCTC). Klement has served as the dean of those campuses of NCTC since 2012. Full story…

UNT Mayborn Alumni Updates

Hal Hilliard, B.A. ’06,  received the Highly Commended Applied Paper Award at Corporate Communication International’s Conference on Corporate Communication 2014, held June 3 – 6, at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong for his paper, “ ‘AP’ Stands for ‘Associated Press:’ Defining the Success of the World’s Oldest Media Company’s First Rebranding.”  Corporate Communications: An International Journal, published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited (UK), sponsors the annual award. Presenting the award was Michael B. Goodman, PhD, North America Regional Editor of Corporate Communications: An International Journal and CCI Director. Hal Hilliard
Theresa Gage Theresa Gage, B.A. ’90,  has been promoted to vice president for the western Region  of Undertone, a digital advertising firm. She’ll be based in Southern California. She is pictured with Roy Busby, one of her former professors and a mentor, at her going away party in Dallas in January 2015. She will continue to serve on the Mayborn School of Journalism Board of Advisors.

College of Music

UNT voice professor Jennifer Lane sang on the recording of Milhaud’s L’Orestie D’Eschyle, which was produced by the University of Michigan’s School of Music.

Although the opera categories will not be announced during the Grammy broadcast on CBS, they will be shown as part of the pre-broadcast ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. EST online at
