UNT Student Leaders

July 9th, 2014 Posted in Alumni News

The UNT Alumni Association believes in supporting our students and providing opportunities so they can receive the best possible experience while on campus. Your membership dollars help us provide activities and opportunities like these listed below.

Student Alumni Association Scholarships

The UNT Alumni Association contributes to student success each year by gifting a portion of its graduation tassel sales from the GRADitude program to support the Student Alumni Association scholarship program. This spring, the alumni association awarded junior Kathleen Spriggs and senior Chris Weatherspoon, Student Alumni Association members, $1,000 scholarships. They are awarded based on need, community involvement and Mean Green pride.

Weatherspoon, a mechanical and energy engineering major, has participated in campus activities to promote class identity and student giving for UNT-related causes.

“Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me and encourages me to donate as a student as well as continuing to give back once I graduate,” he says.

Spriggs, president of the Student Alumni Association and a family studies major, says the scholarship will help her with out-of-pocket costs to attend UNT as an out-of-state student.

“I’m excited about the opportunities this scholarship brings me,” says Spriggs, who hopes to become a child life specialist.

UNT Center for Leadership & Service offers students leadership training

On May 11-16, the Center for Leadership & Service took 61 of the top student leaders at UNT to Bridgeport, Texas for UNT’s fourth annual LeaderShape Institute. LeaderShape is a nationally recognized program and is designed to help students improve their leadership skills, help make a change on campus and in the community, and help students lead with integrity and high ethical standards.  The University of North Texas now has over 250 students and alumni leading with integrity across the nation.

The Center for Leadership & Service is thankful for the relationship we have the UNT Alumni Association. During Guest Leader Night at the Institute, students engaged with a panel of leaders in their respective fields. Guest leaders included Chrissy Baloga (2007), Janet Pittman (1983), Scottie Smith, II (2009) and Philip Witcher.

The program would not be successful without our sponsors. The Center for Leadership & Service would like to thank Wells Fargo, Enterprise, NT Alumni Association, Dean of Students, Student Activities Center, Dining Services, Housing & Residence Life, University Union and UNT Auxiliary Services.
